Jamal Abdel Naser

Born in 1918 and expired in 1970, Egyptian army officer and political leader, first president of the republic of Egypt (1956-70). In 1952 he led the coup that deposed King FAROUK. He became premier (1954) and president (1956). He nationalized the Suez Canal in 1956, precipitating the short-lived invasion by Britain, France, and Israel.

Nasser suffered a disastrous defeat in the 1967 Six-Day War. In fact the three Arab countries then were led by military leaders - Naser, King Hussein and Hafez Asad - but his political support remained strong. He tortured Muslims at large scale without mercy. By his orders, he executed the great Sheik of Islam Sheik Sayed Qutob - an old and ill humble man - just so Naser could gratify Moscow. His personal chef poisoned him.
